Watch: Jo Bird on BBC politics north west
It's very different in Birkenhead. People stop me in the street and ask, “What’s the Green's position on Gaza?”
And I tell them, from the get-go, we've called for an immediate bilateral ceasefire, for a release of all of the hostages, and for an end to arms sales to Israel.
I support that position and I'll tell you why: My Jewish great-grandparents were refugees. They fled fascism in Europe and came to this country in boats. They raised their children and their grandchildren to always stand with the oppressed and never with the oppressor.
So when Keir Starmer's Labour Party started expelling Jews like me for speaking up about the racism we face and for criticising Israel, something is very wrong with Labour.
The Green Party MPs in the House of Commons are needed because we will speak up for international law and for human rights.
Lisa's and Angela's warm words, yours, they're fine. But when it comes to it, the first time it was put to a vote on ceasefire most Labour MPs did not vote for ceasefire.
In Birkenhead, Greens are winning.
We’ve got 10 out of 21 of the local councillors. More people voted Green than voted Labour in the last local elections. On the doorstep people are saying they’re voting Green because we offer real hope and real change, not more business as usual.
I’m really excited about the Green Party’s offer for children and young people.
Firstly, we’d protect our planet so we have one that we can all live on.
We’d invest in renewable energies—wind and solar— and phase out coal, gas, and oil. We’d invest in green jobs for young people particularly in renewable energies, and a mass home insulation programme.
Thirdly, we’d abolish student tuition fees for university.
Fourthly, we’d raise up the minimum wage to £15 per hour, including for all young people.
Our manifesto is fully costed.
The Green Party is the only party that’s honest with voters. We’re saying that we do need to invest more in public services, including for young people.
We’ll fund that partly through a wealth tax. Through a tax on the richest people who own £10 million or more. They pay a bit extra. They wouldn’t feel the pain. We’d all feel the gain.
We’d also bring in a fair carbon tax, so that the polluter pays.
The fiscal straightjacket that Labour has self-imposed, continuing austerity from the Tories - it’s more business as usual.
Only the Greens offer a fairer, greener, cleaner future.
The Green Party have practical plans and solutions that would build 150,000 social and affordable housing every year. None of that would be on the green belt. We’d also protect our urban green spaces.
I’ve never even heard of the ‘grey belt’! What’s that? This is a watering down of Labour’s 'protection' of the Green Belt.
It doesn’t make sense. We have to build warm, affordable homes, for people to rent as well. Your words are fine about people who can afford to buy, if they’re lucky enough to do that.
We also need to protect our social housing from the Right to Buy to preserve it for generations in the future.
The Greens would also protect renters by ending no-fault evictions.
Will you end arms sales to Israel, just like you did against Russia?
This is not an out-take! Just the same old chummy business between Labour and Tories
